Check out our commonly asked questions about NDWA membership.
NDWA is a national organization that fights for the rights and dignity of all domestic workers: childcare providers/nannies, housecleaners, and home care workers. We are a network of more than 70 local organizations and thousands of domestic workers in all 50 states.
Being an NDWA member means contributing what you can to help win rights and dignity for all domestic workers. It also means being part of a powerful, supportive national community. Members also help shape NDWA's priorities by weighing in on key strategic questions. Members fuel NDWA with your energy and ideas!
Any childcare provider/nanny, housecleaner and home care worker can become a member. Your immigration status and employment status don't matter! If you are a member of a local NDWA affiliate organization, you can be an NDWA member too.

NDWA members get unlimited access to Ask Aya, our AI chatbot that provides information on your rights, how to negotiate for better working conditions, and how to address common workplace challenges. Members also have exclusive access to the Video Resource Library, Domestic Worker News, Events and special offers from partner organizations through the Membership Store.
Ask Aya is NDWA’s very own chatbot coach, created by NDWA organizers and engineers, and enhanced with Artificial Intelligence (AI). If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools before, you will find the Ask Aya is similar. You can ask any question related to domestic work! Ask Aya will search from a vast array of resources to give you the most useful responses and talk you through whatever situation you are facing. You can Ask Aya as many questions as you’d like, day or night! What sets Ask Aya apart from other AI tools is that Ask Aya was created by and for the domestic worker movement, using our best training resources, know your rights materials and more. It’s like having the collective wisdom of thousands of other domestic workers in your back pocket! Unlimited access to Ask Aya is one of the core benefits of being an NDWA member.
You can chat with Aya about anything related to your work as a domestic worker! Aya has expertise in worker rights and we’re constantly teaching it more. You can ask about about your rights as a domestic worker, how to solve common workplace challenges, how to negotiate a contract, draft resumes and achieve better communication with your employers. You can even vent about challenges you are facing on the job! If you try to ask something Aya doesn’t know about, or isn’t related to domestic work, it will let you know that it may not be able to help you. While Aya can help you know your rights, it is not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. Ask Aya is also not a medical or financial professional, and cannot give official advice in that capacity either.
We are still training Ask Aya to provide the best possible information and advice -- and you can help! You can give feedback on one of Aya’s responses directly by selecting the thumbs up/down icon on a message. You can also give us more general feedback by selecting the person icon in the upper right corner of Aya, and selecting “Feedback”.
Members commit to taking at least two actions per year to help build our community and win rights and dignity for all. Members also commit to upholding our Vision and Values. NDWA reserves the right to discontinue any individual’s membership at any time, for any reason including failure to uphold the statement of vision and values.
You can see listings of events that we think are relevant to you in the Events section of the Membership Center, These will include both national events that are held over Zoom and in-person local events and activities, if you live in a location where there is an NDWA chapter or affiliate organization that has chosen to promote local events through the Membership Center. Under the description of each event, there will be a button for you to RSVP, receive instructions of how to join the event, and mark your attendance.
In February, 2026 we transitioned to our new membership model to make it easier for more workers to join us and to make membership more aligned with our goal of making all domestic work jobs good jobs. To design the new model, we asked more than 1,000 domestic workers to share their ideas on what the ideal membership requirements and benefits would be. Features of the new model include no longer requiring membership dues, allowing members to choose how they want to show their commitment, and providing benefits that can help workers achieve better working conditions. We listened and then built the Membership Center, Ask Aya and more in response to what we heard!
You can find the list of local organizations that are part of NDWA on the Affiliates and Chapters page. Affiliates are independent nonprofit organizations and Chapters are staffed by NDWA organizers. Remember that whether or not there is a local organization near you, all NDWA members are welcome at our national meetings and events.
You can open the Membership Center in your phone browser and use the "Add to Home Screen" option to create a shortcut.
